How to Get to Kitakata from Tokyo
Kitakata, in the Aizu region of Fukushima, is known for its traditional kura storehouses, sake breweries and famous ramen. It's about 3.5 hours by car or 4 hours by train from Tokyo, an easy trip into rural Japan.
By train (about 4 hours)
Take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Koriyama (about 1 hour 15 minutes).
Change to the JR Ban-etsu West Line for Aizu-Wakamatsu (about 1 hour 15 minutes).
Continue on the same line to Kitakata Station (about 20 minutes).
The whole journey is covered by the Japan Rail Pass.
By bus (cheapest, about 4.5 hours)
Highway buses run from Busta Shinjuku to Aizu-Wakamatsu, from about ¥5,000 one way. Some buses continue to Kitakata. Book ahead for discounts.
By car (about 3.5 hours)
Take the Tohoku Expressway and Ban-etsu Expressway to Aizu-Wakamatsu IC, then drive about 30 minutes to Kitakata. You can also take the Shinkansen to Koriyama and rent a car there. Kitakata is about a 1-hour drive from Koriyama.
